POINT REYES NATIONS’s first community endeavor is a campaign to spearhead, help implement and finance both the elimination of plastic water bottles from West Marin and assist in finding water delivery alternatives with the goal being to provide free, accessible drinking water to members of the community and visitors alike, and to encourage the use of reusable, sustainable, non-plastic water containers.
- 5.4 billion pounds of plastic per year is used to make water bottles
- 86% of water bottles are not recycled
- 38 billion water bottles per year end up in US landfills
- 295 kilos of water and 6.45 kilos of oil are used to make 1 kilo of PET plastic
- Bottled water manufacturers are subject to less inspections than tap water suppliers
- 40% of bottled water comes directly from a tap water source
WITH THE REALIZATION that bottled water has become a fixture of our societal landscape, the equally stark reality of the above statistics mandate action. This campaign is underway and is now soliciting commitments to participate and partner in our efforts from community businesses, organizations, event producers and individuals. We recognize that making the commitment of principal is only a first step and that we will commit to aiding each business or organization, large or small, to work towards the goal of a plastic water bottle free West Marin. To reach our goals will require both will and effort on a community wide scale so we encourage all to step forward and pledge your support by sending a check to:
Point Reyes Nation, Box 629, Pt Reyes Ca 94956 or contacting us at volunteer@pointreyesnation.com
